Read, Give, Grow!

Shoutout to everyone who helped make our READ, GIVE, GROW CELEBRATION this past Saturday a hit! Special thanks to our friends at 826LA for hosting our event, McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream and Isabella’s Cookie Company for the sweet treats, Steele Canvas Basket for our donation carts, Magic Characters for the entertainment, Ariel Winter and Barney Saltzberg for reading, and our awesome TEAM INTERN and volunteers!!! The day was a definite success – we’re donating two HUGE bins of books to Edelman Children’s Court Shelter Care Program (in honor of National Foster Care Month) and Operation Homefront (in honor of National Military Appreciation Month). Thanks for helping us change kids’ lives through reading and giving!

Ariel Winter: Special Guest Blog Post!

Milk and Bookies 2013 195

Hey all, enjoy this special guest blog post from Modern Family star Ariel Winter!

Last month, I attended the Milk + Bookies Story Time Celebration where celebrities read their favorite books to a crowd of young, eager children. I was absolutely floored when I saw how much time the staff spent to make the event as special as possible for all the guests and children. I had the most amazing experience at Milk + Bookies that I am determined to lend as much time as possible to get people involved!

Books have been a huge part of my life, and have educated me more than I think anything could have.

As a young girl, my favorite pastime was reading. The minute I learned to read when I was three years old, books were all I wanted for my birthday or any holiday. The stories fed my imagination and were my escape. I could picture myself as the characters, which when you’re young you’re always doing your own form of “acting,” so I would act out the pages of the book for fun! I learned so much about being creative and using my imagination that, even now, I can create my own stories on the spot to tell my nieces before bed.

As I got older, I read about three to four novels a week. When I was 12, Harper Collins Publishing had an office on the FOX lot, which is where we film “Modern Family”. My lovely studio teacher, Sharon, met the man who ran the office and told him of my love for books. He lent me books every week and even had me give him reviews.

Milk + Bookies donates books to children, which is something that’s so special to me, I want everyone to know that no matter what age you are, you can participate and help.

Anyone can host their own Milk + Bookies book-raiser, such as having a Milk + Bookies birthday party, book club, community service activity, throw a small party at a book store or even ask friends to come over and donate old books to help any way they can!

I know that I am devoted to help, so I hope y’all will too!

Spotlight On: Quinn and Eli!

Quinn and Eli

Another great idea: joint birthday book-raisers! Quinn and Eli raised 27 books- at just 4 years old. Milk+Bookies is an easy way for your kids to experience giving to others for the first time, and we believe that it’s never too early to start teaching kids to give back. Find out how to host your own party (and maybe get a blog spotlight too!) here.
