Stacks of books from Discover Books in the Story Time Celebration donation room

We would love to offer a BIG thanks to our partner Discover Books for supplying the thousands of titles that comprise our donation room at the Story Time Celebration! Here, kids can handpick books to inscribe with warm messages and donate to children in need.

This little guy loves donating!

Discover Books was founded on the idea that a good book should never be thrown away. They set out to redistribute, resell, and recycle used books, ensuring that they either make their way into grateful communities nationwide or are repurposed into new goods, and do not end up in landfills.

In addition to contributing to the Story Time Celebration, Discover Books also supplements our school-to-school book drive program, Leaders + Readers, year-round, helping us provide books to thousands of kids in schools and organizations throughout Los Angeles!

National March Into Literacy Month

march into literacyIt’s March Into Literacy Month!

This month we celebrate our LOVE of reading and how important books are to improving children’s literacy!

Here are a few ways to celebrate March Into Literacy Month: Brains Need Books

  • Read your favorite book over and over again!
  • Volunteer to read to children!
  • Write your own story!
  • Dress up as your favorite literary character!
  • Host your own Milk + Bookies Book-Raiser!
  • Open a new book and enjoy an adventure!…

Here are a few of our favorite reads for March:

Max the Brave by Ed Veremaxthebrave book

“Max is a brave, determined kitten. A kitten who wants to chase mice, but he has one itty bitty problem. He doesn’t know what a mouse looks like. So he sets out to find one! From elephants to monsters, Max asks them all if they’re a mouse or if they know where to find one. Can Max find what he’s looking for in the answers and silliness?”

Bloom by Doreen CroninBloom book

“A glass kingdom is no place for a Mud Fairy. Bloom and her mud fairy magic might be able to turn weeds into flowers and spin sand into glass, but the people of the kingdom ceaselessly complain about the trails of dirt and puddles of mud that seem to follow her every step, and finally they cast her out.

But when the glass castle begins to crack, then cracks some more, the King and Queen in a panic search for the long-banished fairy, but they can’t find Bloom anywhere.”

Instructions by Neil Gaiman
instructions book

“Trust Dreams.
Trust your heart,
and trust your story.

A renowned storyteller whose words have transported readers to magical realms and an acclaimed illustrator of lushly imagined fairy-tale landscapes guide a traveler safely through lands unknown and yet strangely familiar . . .

. . . and home again.”

Robo-Sauce by Adam Rubin
robosauce book“FACT: Robots are awesome. They have lasers for eyes, rockets for feet, and supercomputers for brains! Plus, robots never have to eat steamed beans or take baths, or go to bed. If only there were some sort of magical “Robo-Sauce” that turned squishy little humans into giant awesome robots… Well, now there is.”

Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Peña
last stop on market street“Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his friend Colby. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the boys on the bus? How come they always have to get off in the dirty part of town? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from grandma, who helps him see the beauty—and fun—in their routine and the world around them.”

Imaginary Fred by Eoin Colfer
imaginary fred“Did you know that sometimes, with a little electricity, or luck, or even magic, an imaginary friend might appear when you need one? An imaginary friend like Fred.

Fred floated like a feather in the wind until Sam, a lonely little boy, wished for him and, together, they found a friendship like no other.”

Did you know?

  • 1 in 4 school-aged kids in the U.S. can’t read.
  • In low-income neighborhoods, there is only one book per every 300 children.
  • If a child is not reading proficiently by the 4th grade, he or she will have approximately a 78% chance of not catching up. (Begin To Read)

Take action and change these statistics!

By hosting your own Milk + Bookies book-raiser, you are teaching children the importance of reading and setting them on a path to a lifetime of literacy!
