Summer Book Drop Offs!!

The M+B team has just wrapped up our most successful year of Leaders + Readers yet…donating over 130,000 books to 37 Title I elementary schools in LA that have impacted over 40,000 students!!

Just because school is officially out and summer is now here, doesn’t mean the book donations stop. We wanted to celebrate our achievement by kicking off our summer with a BANG and donating an additional 3,500 books to various in need and underserved organizations throughout L.A.! Check out where we went in the map below:

Our efforts are in direct response to the “Summer Slide” phenomenon…

Summer slide” is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year.

Unfortunately, children in low-income households fall behind an average of 2 months in reading during the summer. And, summer slide is cumulative, with these learning losses building up each summer.

Our goal in donating large amounts of books to organizations like the ones above each summer, is to prevent any loss in reading achievement and to give ALL students an equal start the following school year.

Reading just 4 to 6 books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores from the spring to the fall, so even small steps are very beneficial.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Help us beat summer slide and close the achievement gap in L.A. schools by donating books this summer! Contact us for more details on how you can get involved: info@milkandbookies.org.

A Message from Our Founder…

static1-squarespace-12

In keeping with our democracy, America has been loudly voicing our differences. In doing so, our children have recently been exposed to language and behaviors which we hope they will find unacceptable. Many of us have expressed our fears and listened to our children’s confusion. Please remember to hold close your values and the values that you know, as humans and humanitarians, to be due north on your moral compass. Inclusion, empathy and compassion are the ideals by which most families live and raise their children. Now, more than ever, we must “do unto others as you would have others do unto you”.

For the students with whom we work, most especially the recipients, there is a great need for support, and, now, perhaps an even greater need for equality in education and empowerment by service.

The future is always uncertain, and feels more so today, but we will never lose the ability to positively effect another person’s life by being kind. Together we will continue to fight inequalities and we WILL create a better world.

With my warmest wishes for a brighter tomorrow,

Meredith

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party Recap!

img_7752

We had SO MUCH FUN at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on September 24th! A HUGE thank you to The Grove and everyone who came out for an afternoon of crafts, snacks, balloons, face painting, and – of course – story time!

Many thanks to Teak & Lace for the beautiful decorations, Magic Characters for bringing The Mad Hatter and Alice to life, Clementine for the delicious goodies, Pottery Barn Kids for supplying the tea party sets, Elizabeth and James for generously donating a portion of profits to the event, and the lovely Paget Brewster (Criminal Minds) for coming out to read stories to us!

img_0028img_0007enlight1-4

“I could tell you my adventures — beginning from this morning, but it’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.”

img_0170img_0044

“Yes, that’s it! It’s always tea time.”

img_0173img_0147img_0178

“And what is the use of a book without pictures or conversation?”

img_0177img_0142img_0199

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

img_0175img_0079img_7677

“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense; nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it wasn’t.”

img_7675img_0071img_0062

“I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid, Sir, because I’m not myself you see.”

img_0052enlight1-7img_0064

“You’re entirely bonkers. But I will tell you a secret: all the best people are.”

img_7707enlight1-3

“Everything’s got a moral, if only you can find it.”

img_0037img_0106img_0209

“Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were really impossible.”

See you all next time in Wonderland!
